MLB Pushing Social Media with it’s 140 Club

One of the big 3 sport corporations has finally done something in the social media world worth noticing. And to tell you the truth, I’m happy its MLB! Just this month, MLB launched its “140 Club”, a one-stop hub for all twitter-related, baseball-related  information.  The site serves as a “news service” that mainly shows any and all tweets that have to do with baseball. Supported by Mass Relevance, the new site – MLB.com/the140club – is one of the first of its kind. Not only does it display recent tweets that have to do with baseball, but its controlled to center around MLB hot topics. So, for instance, if the Mets win the World Series (…highly likely ;) ), the site will display tweets from all around the world that have to do with the Mets’ first big win since 86′.

Additionally, the site offers links to the latest short news stories, and gives you the chance to follow your favorite MLB athletes on twitter.

I’m into this. Usually, big corporations are slow to come up with interesting ideas that appeal to the younger fan base (see the Cubs’ “Social Media” Night), but I think MLB has done a good job here.  Sure, like everything else, the site has its pitfalls. Say you want to check out a hot topic such as the recent spike in home runs hit…well, you might see some things like this…

Umm…No comment… But don’t fret, because you still have your baseball aficionados who get thrown into the mix…

Overall, its a good play by MLB (…yes, pun is intended), and one that is almost gauranteed to be emulated by other leagues. Give credit to MLB for doing this right. And while you’re at it, be sure to follow us on Twitter! @TheAcademyofSM
